Outline for Piano I/II Class

While individual goals will be addressed with each student, the following information
lists the general course of study:

First Quarter

Proper posture, body and hand position
Identify on the keyboard and on the staves
Identify standard fingering numberings
Begin developing fine motor skills as they pertain to the piano keyboard
Begin to correlate notes on the staff accurately to the notes on the keyboard
Begin developing eye-hand coordination
I Chords in C ,F, and G
Begin developing steady pulse and rhythmic response
Play using quarter, half and whole note/rest rhythms
Technical exercises and selected pieces to develop above 

Second Quarter

Sight reading within the five finger position
Helf-steps, whole steps and major scales
Scales C, F, and G Major and their primary chords, block and arpeggio
Accurate fingering out of the five finger position
Moving Positions
Continue skill development in eye-hand coordination, staff to keyboard correlation, and steady beat/rhythmic response
Play with the previous mastered rhythms as well as dotted half notes/rests and eight notes/rests
Technical exercises and selected pieces to develop above

Third Quarter

Sight reading within an extended five finger position
Scales of D, E, A,  and B and their primary chords, block and arpeggio
Accurate fingering within the above parameters
Confident movement in the keys experienced thus far
Add dotted quarter and eight note rhythms and rests and syncopation
Technical exercises and selected pieces to develop above

Fourth Quarter

Sight reading from a broader spectrum
Scales of B flat, E flat, A flat, D flat and G flat and their primary chords, block and arpeggio
Accurate fingering in all work
Increased confidence in playing
Additional rhythms that appear in selected repertoire
Technical exercise and selected pieces to develop above
