At Stone Academy I have the most interesting job in the building.

Here's some of what I do:
  • Technology Specialist
  • Serve on (and some years chair) the Technology Vision Planning Committee
  • Serve as ex-officio member of the School Improvement Council
  • Teach Design Excursion Encore classes after school
  • Co-produce Jumpstart News
  • Sponsor the Stone Publishing Company, a Friday Club
  • Webmaster of the School Site

As Tech Spec, I order computers, and try to keep them running properly.  I am responsible for calling Educational Technology Services to save the day when problems are beyond me.  I also help the faculty with software training and keep up with licensing issues.

The Technology Vision Planning Committee is a committee of the School Improvement Council (S.I.C.).  It is made up of faculty representatives from each grade level (and related arts), parents, and the community.  This group develops the school's technology plan and determines strategies for reaching our goals.  The Technology goal is one of four school-wide goals that the S.I.C. has identified.   The committee meets on the fourth Wednesday afternoon of every month.

I report to the S.I.C. regarding progress of the Technology Committee, informing the council of challenges and achievements.   SIC meets the first Thursday afternoon of most months.

My Encore class, Design Excursion, meets on Tuesday and Friday afternoons in the art room.  Encore is an enrichment program, offering private lessons to interested students in a variety of areas.  Encore is part of the magnet program at Stone.

Jumpstart News is Stone's student-run daily live TV program.  I work with Media Specialist, Alice Littlejohn, and Drama Teacher, Nicole Ackerman, to constantly improve the show's format, quality, and content.  Fourth and fifth graders audition for jobs on one of five crews per year.  They report to the studio each morning before 8:00 prepared to broadcast throughout the building at eight.

Friday Clubs are open to fourth and fifth graders to paricipate in their choice of a wide variety of activities sponsored by teachers and staff members.  Students choose a club each semester.  The Stone Publishing Company is mine.  Eight -ten students participate each semester to publish staff trading cards.  They vote for ten staff members (one each from ten different areas), interview them, write consise and interesting stories for the flip sides of the cards, make a commercial, and encourage collecting among the students.  I tell the students the trading cards may not have much collector value in the world at large, but they'll be priceless to them when they're 30 and can show them to their own children.

As school webmaster, I am responsible for keeping the website up-to-date, content-rich and accurate.  I need lots of help.  I appreciate anyone who finds mistakes letting me know.  I am also available to help teachers to develop their own websites, which are required by the district, and can be very useful to parents, students, and the community when done well.
