Ed. Science Department, RHS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome!!! Your science class this year will combine classwork, discussion, lecture, lab, activities, and group work. You, the students, will take an active part in the learning process. Materials You should already have a textbook, or it will be assigned shortly. PLEASE COVER YOUR BOOK AND WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE INSIDE COVER! You are responsible for turning it in at the end of the year in the same condition as you received it. Have with you every day: 1. Your textbook. 2. A three-ring binder (organizing tabs recommended) to keep handouts, class notes, lab assignments, etc. 3. Pen and/or pencil. No fluorescent colors or red pens, please. 4. Loose-leaf notebook paper. NOTE: You will need a calculator with some chapters. Grading A uniform grading scale is used by the Science Department, and at all high schools in Greenville County: 40% Daily grades, including classwork, homework, quizzes, informal lab writeups, and lab participation. 60% Major grades, including tests, major projects, and formal lab reports. All students will take midterm and final exams. In Chemistry, the midterm and final account for 20% of the semester grade. Currently, all Physical Science students must take the State-mandated End-of-Course Test, which accounts for 20% of their total grade. Safety Safety will be an important consideration at all times in this class and in the laboratory. Students will be taught specific safety rules, and will be expected to follow them. Students must complete a safety unit, and must take and pass a safety test before being allowed to participate in lab. Note that the cost of any equipment, glassware, etc., damaged as the result of horseplay, will be charged to the responsible student(s). Expectations Students are expected to be in class, on time, each day we meet. Any exceptions will be dealt with according to the Student Handbook. Students are expected to put forth their best effort, which includes studying, completing homework, and participating in lab and group activities. Students will follow all RHS and classroom rules. PLEASE NOTE THAT CELL PHONES ARE PROHIBITED AND SHOULD BE KEPT IN YOUR LOCKER. IF A CELL PHONE IS SEEN, RHS POLICY REQUIRES THAT A REFERRAL BE WRITTEN AND THAT THE PHONE BE CONFISCATED. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
