Welcome aboard. My name is Commander Denny Shelton and it is my pleasure to serve as the Senior Naval Science Instructor for the Mauldin Navy. The Mauldin Navy serves two missions, the mission of Mauldin High School which is to provide every student the opportunity, challenge, and support to realize his or her educational potential and the ability to assume a productive role in a democratic society. We also serve the mission of Junior ROTC program which is to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.
To accomplish schools mission we do our best to integrate our studies with what is going on in other classrooms. For instance, if the history class is studying the civil war we try to time our lesson so that our ROTC students are researching ships and Naval leaders from the same era. To assist our students in preparing and accessing the college of their choice the Navy also provides free, computer based study aids for both the SAT and ACT exams.
Our ROTC mission is geared toward increasing our students self confidence and leadership by placing them in positions where they are expected to plan, organize and execute daily and long range events. Here they succeed or fail on their own merit while in a controlled environment. They learn the value and uses of their traditional classroom education in preparing to meet various challenges such as scheduling, estimating manpower and equipment, time management and lessons in money management. Succeed or fail the lessons learned and experiences are invaluable and prepare them for a life outside of the classroom.
Welcome again to the Maverick Navy. Please browse the department webpage as well as this and Master Chief Bailey’s and contact us with any questions.
