Our Goal for 6th Grade English:
We will be learning how to live like writers by exploring the way we look at the world paying attention to the details of our experience and learning to vividly communicate what we see.
We will also learn how to grow as thoughtful readers by exploring our thinking as we read and using discussion to deepen our thinking.
English Notebook: This should be brought home EVERY NIGHT and in CLASS EVERY DAY!!! We use a 3-Subject spiral bound style notebook. The reason for the specific notebook type is that we break down our assignments into THREE SPECIFIC SECTIONS: Section 1: The Reader's Notebook Section 2: The Writer's Notebook Section 3: The Vocabulary, Notes and Questions Notebooks are collected every one or two weeks by the teacher in order to assess and grade work.
NOTEBOOKS WILL BE GRADED! Either individually as minor assessments showing students mastery of individual reading or writing skills or In a group as major assessments showing student's progress over time
Students should be bringing their English Notebook home EVERY NIGHT in order to: STUDY and WORK on ASSIGNMENTS in both their Reader's NB and their Writer's NB (This way they are showing their VERY BEST writing, thinking and communicating on graded assignments).
Just because we are done with the assignment in class doesn't mean they are finished working their thoughts onto paper. Students can revise assignments at ANY TIME until it is collected for a grade.
Students are asked to reflect in writing on EACH graded assignment.
ONCE an assignment has been graded, students have ONE WEEK to Revise the assignment and turn it back in for a NEW GRADE! This allows for students to grow in their knowledge and improve on their English skills. |
