Parents and Guardians, Welcome to Miss Valenti's 8th grade Spanish I class. I thank you in advance for your support of your child's second language learning endeavor this year.
I ask that you please encourage your child to do his/her best by making sure they are bringing their materials to class, participating, studying new vocabulary regularly, completing assignments, and most importantly listening in class. Their ears are their most important asset in the classroom. Please stress to them how being in a foreign language classroom and listening well and attempting to speak are so important.
I know that many of you may feel that you can not help your child study Spanish because you can not pronounce the words or understand their meanings. It's okay! The fact that you care enough to sit with them and study their vocabulary is enough. Let them try and teach you, and in doing so, they will learn their information more throughly as well. Please just continue to support and encourage them.
I wish you and your child the best as they embark on their 8th grade year. If you have any questions about your child's progress or assignments, please contact me at 355-7069 or jvalenti@greenville.k12.sc.us. I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Please check the Weekly Assignment page for current assignments, suggested study topics, upcoming test, projects, and other pertinent information. It is updated by the end of each Monday.
The revised (2006) South Carolina Modern and Classical Language standards, based on the national standards, are designed around integrated, real-world themes of high interest and lend themselves to high-frequency language use. The curriculum was written so that content spirals, meaning that students will be revisiting concepts on a regular basis. The standards are based on performance in the language. This allows students to increase their proficiency in the language by practicing the content, cultural knowledge, and skills in real-life situations. The expectation for all students is to USE the language and practice, practice, practice! Someone put it to me this way, would a child take chorus without the expectation of having to sing? Surely not. Think about that as we embark on a new year with a new way of doing things. I do not have all the answers but I will do my best to implement it in the best way I know how. I only ask for your patience and understanding as we make our way through this new journey.
On the following pages and links, you should be able to find all the information you need to keep you up to date and in the "know" about our class. |
