August 17, 2011                                                                                        English Strategies

Dear Parents,

It is my pleasure to be working with your child this year.  We will have two periods each day to cover all of the strands of the English Language Arts curriculum--reading, writing, vocabulary, and research.   Naturally, the pace will be rigorous. Please encourage your child to let me know if he or she needs help.

Students should bring the following materials to class: 3-ring binder with three dividers (writing/grammar, literature, vocabulary), loose-leaf paper, a blue or black pen, a correcting pen, a highlighter, Literature textbook, and an agenda.  Students should cover the textbook with a non-sticky cover.

The report card grade will be computed as follows according to district guidelines:

               major tests and compositions          50%

               minor assessments                            50%

                              including quizzes, classwork, homework

All students and I share the responsibility for an appropriate classroom environment.  It is important to be on time with class materials to maximize learning opportunities.  I expect all of my students to respect everyone’s right to a pleasant environment conducive to learning.  It is my hope that students will take advantage of as many educational opportunities as possible.  The more students put themselves into their work and extra activities, the more enjoyable the year will be.  I am looking forward to a year of improving language skills in a happy, cooperative, and industrious atmosphere.

It is convenient to send progress reports and notes by email.  There is space on the video permission form for email information.  If you need to speak with me, call the school at 355-7076 or e-mail me at

kwright@greenville.k12.sc.us  and I will gladly return your call or note.

Sincerely,

Dear Parents,

It is my pleasure to be working with your child this year.  I would like to address the differences you can expect in 8th grade English Language Arts.  Your child has had two periods for the reading and writing content.  This year students only have one period to cover the standards of ELA.  Naturally, the pace will be rigorous. Please encourage your child to let me know if he or she needs help.

August 17, 2011                                                                                    Creative Expressions

Dear Parents,

It is my pleasure to be working with your child this year in Creative Expressions.  Students will have the opportunity to develop compositions further than time usually permits in a language arts classroom.  They will work in a variety of genres, some of their own choosing.

In the last few years, many of our writing students have won awards and had works published.  I will provide information about publishing opportunities and competitions as it becomes available.  If you know of any, please contact me.  I hope many students will experience the satisfaction of publication.

Students should bring the following materials to class: 3-ring binder, loose-leaf paper, blue or black pen, correcting pen, highlighter, and agenda.

The report card grade will be computed as follows according to district guidelines:

               major tests and compositions          50%

               minor assessments                            50%

                              including quizzes, classwork, homework
