English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Role of the ESOL Teacher

·        To help students to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.

·        To support student’s content area learning

·        To advocate for students by collaborating with other teachers and communicating with
      parents

·        To facilitate the integration of students into the school community both academically and
      socially

English Language Proficiency Testing

·        Students who have a primary home language other than English should be referred to the
ESOL teacher for language proficiency testing.

·        The IDEA Language Proficiency Test (IPT) is used for ESOL program placement purposes.

·        The English Language Development Assessment (ELDA) is administered in the spring to
measure annual progress in English language acquisition.

·        Both instruments have various levels for K-12 students; test the four language skills (listening,
speaking, reading, and writing); and result in classifications from Non-English Proficient to
     Fluent English Proficient.

Assessment of ESOL Proficient

·        Teachers are required to modify their instruction, assignments, and tests for English language
learners (ELLs).  The report card should reflect these modifications.

·        If a student is not on grade level, the teacher should add the report card comment
     (081) “reflects modified curriculum”.

·        Please keep in mind that students should not receive a failing grade due to limited English
     proficiency.

·        ELLs in 3rd-5th grade will be tested on all portions of new state test, formally PACT, with the
exception of those students who entered a U.S. school after July 1, 2008.  Those students
may be exempted from the ELA portion only.
