Guidance Counseling and the Mission

of Crestview Elementary School

Guidance activities support the school’s mission to partner with students, families, and the community to ensure that children succeed in a safe, nurturing, and academically challenging environment.  The guidance program offers students frequent classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling.

Classroom guidance lessons align with the standards of the South Carolina School Counseling Model. These standards emphasize Learning to Live, Learning to Learn, and Learning to Work. In classroom guidance
students explore topics such as social skills, conflict resolution, career awareness, character development, goal-setting, safety, and study skills.

Small group counseling offers students an opportunity to do some in-depth work on issues of concern to them. For example, the Good Grief group allows students who have experienced the death of a loved one to process their feelings, honor memories, and gain a greater understanding of the grief process. Other small groups explore topics such as communication skills, behavior management and responsibility, relaxation and coping skills, and study skills.

When students see the counselor to discuss individual concerns, they are invited to the Cozy Corner, where they may rock and hold a stuffed toy (Honey, the huggable bee, is the favorite) while they talk.

Through all of the guidance activities, students are encouraged to discover their strengths and to develop life skills that will be of value to them now and in the future.
