 In Class
Last week, the children drew themselves as the Community Helpers they would like to be when they grow up. They wrote stories describing their chosen jobs. These are displayed in the hall outside our room. This week, we will learn about signs of Spring. We will read stories and poems from our Spring unit. In Math, we are learning about Measurement.

 In Focus
With approximately fifty school days left in our school year, we have some areas that we are really beginning to put in focus.

First off is Reading. Students are expected to read at a certain level by the end of the year.
You can help at home by:
• Reading the Library book and Baggy Book with your child.
(Please read them at least two times a night.) We have noticed that our best readers are those that read their Baggy Books.
• Making sure your child recognizes the “Popcorn Words,” the color words, and the number words. (A list was sent home last week in your child’s Folder.) Help your child to use the Popcorn words in a sentence.

We are also concentrating on Sentence Writing at this time. Since this is such a very important skill for next year, we are encouraging students to generate complete sentences that can be read. We will now include writing sentences as part of our Homework at least one day a week.
You can help at home by:
• Having your child write a sentence about something that just happened, the book you just read together, or something your child would like to do next weekend. Write sentences using popcorn words or color words.
• Help your child write a letter to someone (a relative or friend).
• Let your child find and cut out a picture from a magazine, glue it onto a sheet of paper and write a sentence about it.
* At first, you may need to write some of the words your child tells you. After that, read the sentence together. Then, have him or her copy the sentence.

We have seen much progress toward meeting these goals. We will be working very hard in class to maximize students’ skills in these areas.
