First Quarter in FOURTH GRADE
Language Arts: Reading and Writing
For literature, my fourth grade students will bereading The Talking Earth. This novel is an excellent example of children's literature serving as an interdisciplinary resource for students to learn about such concepts as ecology, geography and biomes, and the clash within cultural groups and among classes in today's society. The students will also practice identifying various literary elements within the novel and they will practice writing extended responses to comprehension questions using the RADS technique.
For language, the students will begin the year identifying and writing the four types of sentences. They will also study nouns (common, proper, plural, singular, and possessive) as well as predicates and subjects (simple, compound, and understood). Students will apply their skills to the writing process with Mrs. Guth.
