Dear Parents, August 2011
Hello! My name is Mrs. Jones-Parker, and I am your child’s sixth grade Social Studies teacher this year.
Your child and I will be in room 604, which will become a place I believe they will love to be.
Since I always like to know a few things about my own children’s teachers, I want to tell you a little bit
about myself. I have been teaching middle school for twenty-eight years; twenty-three of those have
been here at Northwood. On the home front, my husband and I have five wonderful children ranging
in ages from thirty to twelve. Outside of school I keep busy with my family’s activities involving church,
Girl Scouts, sports, and anything else that happens to come up in the few spare minutes that are left.
In our class this year, we will study ancient civilizations. We will study the first civilizations in the Middle East,
Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. We will go from ancient times through the Middle Ages and
end during the Renaissance.
All students will need:
-
spiral notebook
-
paper
-
pocket folder
-
pens/pencils
-
pencil sharpener (hand-held)
-
highlighters (3 colors)
-
colored pencils
-
box of tissues, if you would be able to donate one or two, we would be very grateful
We can never have enough tissues. We need MANY of each to get through the school year. If you
can send some, please do so whenever it is convenient for you throughout the year. Thank you so much!
Students will be assigned homework more than once per week, but not usually every day. Sometimes they
will be given more than one day to complete an assignment.
Quarterly grades will reflect student performance on tests, quizzes, daily assignments, notebook grades,
and homework. Long-range projects may be counted twice in the grade book. We will not have more
than one long-range project per quarter.
We will adhere to the district’s grading system:
93-100 =A 85-92=B 77-84=C 70-76=D Below 70=F
Each student will receive an Agenda that contains a copy of the Student Handbook as well as
other excellent reference sources and organization tools. Parents are strongly encouraged to go
through the Agenda with their child at home. Each child is also responsible for following the rules
each teacher has posted in the classroom.
Our classroom guidelines are:
1. Students are to be in their seats before the tardy bell rings.
2. Students are to bring needed materials to class each day.
3. Students will write legibly.
4. Students are to keep their belongings under their desks.
5. Students are to respect others and their property.
In the upcoming months, I am looking forward to getting to know each of my students as we work together.
I want you to know that your input is always welcome. My email address is

to contact me.
