What's Going On?
                            October, 2009

Our media center has a  flexible schedule for grades 3-5.  That means that teachers may send down as many as three students at a time any time during the day for checkout.  The classroom teacher and I determine units of study for the entire class that correlate with the grade level curriculum.  This flexibility allows for greater and more efficient use of the media center by all.  So far, these grade levels have been working on using the computerized catalog (OPAC) in preparation for beginning  Accelerated Reader.
We have also been training our third-fifth grade students to use self-checkout.

Our kindergarten and first graders are on a fixed schedule, coming at a set time each week for story time and checkout.  These two grade levels are learning about the Caldecott Award, given every year to children's book illustrators and authors who demonstrate excellence in a particular work. We also emphasize the SC book award nominees--they are always favorites.

Our second graders are currently on a fixed schedule, learning their way around the library this year.  Each week we cover a new Dewey Decimal section of the media center.

We are all looking forward to our Fall Book Fair to be held November 9-13.  This is always an exciting time at Welcome!  We will be open during the PTA meeting the evening of November 9 and during the day all week from 7:45-3.  We close at noon on Friday.

In the spring we will learn about variants of fairy tales -- did you know that every county has its own Cinderella story? -- and genres of literature. First graders will make story telling props to use to retell a story.
