Hello!

My name is Sandra Sholts,ESOL teacher for Mauldin Middle School and Mauldin High School.During 2nd period at Mauldin High I teach English 9.

I was born in Vallejo, California at Mare Island Hospital. My father was in the Navy, so you can call me a Navy Brat. During my dad’s military career, we lived in Memphis, Tennessee (he was born in Springfield, Tennessee….so I’m half-Southern. My mother was also born in Vallejo). From there we moved to Tiburon, California (It’s an island in the San Francisco Bay).I attended 1st grade in Hawthorne, Nevada. No, it’s not near Las Vegas, but is in the high desert. Then we moved to Honolulu, Hawaii. We spent 1 year on Midway Island and I attended a one-room schoolhouse with grades 1-6.After 4 years in Hawaii, we returned to California to Fremont (where the big Speedway is now), and then lived in  Napa Valley,(near San Francisco), where I attended middle and high school.

I was married in Napa and my two daughters were born there before we moved to the mountains in Northern California. One daughter lives here in Taylors, and her husband works for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Dept. My daughter is a corporate V.P. in charge of the enterprise project management office for a firm based in Los Angeles. My other daughter still lives in Chico, CA and works with a private financial services company. They have given us 5 beautiful grandchildren who I love to spoil as often as I can.We lived in Stirling City and Paradise while I attended California State University. I received a B.A. in English Arts and then studied for a further year to become a teacher.  I taught at Paradise High School for six years before I made a career decision to buy into an Engineering firm located in Chico, California. I was co-owner and C.E.O. I also trained in a Chico institute and taught adults in the evenings; meditation and relaxation classes. The engineering firm was sold after operating for10 years and I was able to travel for 2 years before deciding to settle in Greenville, S.C.

In Greenville, I met my husband, Rick, who is a veteran and is now employed by the U.S. Post Office. His two sons keep us very emotional as the oldest, a graduate of Eastside High School,  is serving with the U.S. Army and has had tours in Bosnia, Alaska, Iraq, New York, and is now serving in Afganistan with the 10th Mountain Division . His brother joined the Marine Corps, after graduating from Mauldin High School, and is now stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. He also had the opportunity to serve in Iraq.

I love to travel and see new places and revisit the places that I have seen. I have traveled through, or visited 38 of the 50 United States, been to see 7 countries outside of the states and have been to 7 different Caribbean Islands. I would love to see the Big Lakes States, N.D., S.D., Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Also, I plan to visit Vermont, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Massachusetts.  I love visiting different cultures, and meeting diverse people. Viva la Difference! So you can imagine that I love my job working with the students from Mauldin Middle and Mauldin High, and meeting their parents….people that are from 16 different countries and speak 11 different languages. I look forward to helping my students achieve their goals of learning to read, write, speak and listen in their new language of English.
