PE IV ( Team Sports ) Course Description: To promote and develop optimum physical, mental, ethical, and social development of each student through lectures, demonstrations, games, practice, sportsmanship, role-playing, trial and error learning, and teamwork. To develop an understanding of fitness, volleyball, badminton, weight lifting, bowling, and table tennis. This will include learning the rules and regulations, developing basic skills, offensive and defensive strategies. The fitness and weight lifting portion of this class will allow students to develop skills and attitudes used in creating a plan to achieve a personal level of fitness. Instructional Philosophy: The Wade Hampton High School Physical Education Department is a teacher driven environment based on cooperative learning techniques. Students will be required to work together in a sports related atmosphere to enhance teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. Daily participation is expected by students to promote a cooperative learning atmosphere. South Carolina PE Standards/Course Goals: Standard 1: The student will demonstrate competence in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. (Psychomotor Domain)
The student should develop competence in at least two different movement forms. The student should come to recognize the movement form competencies as establishing a foundation for continued motor skill acquisition and maintaining a physically active lifestyle. | Standard 2: The student will demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performing of physical activities. (Cognitive Domain)
The student should learn to analyze motor performance and to use that information to improve his or her own performance. The student should use cognitive information to understand and enhance his or her motor skill acquisition and performance and to design a personal fitness program. | Standard 3: The student will participate regularly in physical activity. The student should come to recognize and understand the significance of physical activity with regard to the quality of life and should develop skills, interests, and desires to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. The student should acquire the ability to experience satisfaction and enjoyment while pursuing personal physical activity goals and to recognize that physical activity can provide a positive environment for social interaction. | Major Assignments/Projects Students will learn Health Related and Skill Related Fitness Components and be given an exam based on their understanding of these concepts. Also, students will be put into “teams” when covering different topics of Physical Education. Students will be responsible for learning and demonstrating rules and correct game play in each of the areas covered. Grading Procedures: 60% - Dress and Participation + = quarter grade 40% - Written Tests and Quizzes Quarter #3 (40%) + Quarter #4 (40%) + Final Exam (20%) = Final Semester Grade Instructional Materials / Resources / Required Textbook: Textbook “ Personal Fitness For You” & Wade Hampton High School Student Handbook Rules for Student Behavior: For general school rules please refer to the student handbook for expectations and consequences. The following expectations apply for the Physical Education Department. 1. All students are to be in the locker room before the tardy bell rings. 2. Students are REQUIRED and EXPECTED to DRESS OUT every day. PE uniform and TENNIS SHOES ONLY !! Only Tennis shoes allowed in the Gym. 3. Only a DOCTOR’S note can excuse you from PARTICIPATING. No parent notes will be excepted. 4. You are responsible for your assigned gym locker. A fee of $5.00 will charged for any lost or stolen lock. 5. All equipment is off limits until permission for use is given. This is a safety issue. 6. NO HANGING from the basketball goals or climbing of the bleachers at ANY time. 7. NO BOOKBAGS or POCKET BOOKS etc are allowed in the gym during class 8. NO FOOD, CANDY OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE GYM – NO EXCEPTIONS 9. NEVER leave the gym or playing field without permission. This is a safety issue. 10. All early dismissals should be at the beginning or end of class due to safety and supervision issues. We cannot allow students in the locker room to get their belongings for unexpected early dismissals. Please notify the teacher at the beginning of class if you have an early dismissal. 11. SHOW PEOPLE YOU CARE “ Lou Holtz” Consequences for Violating Class and School Rules / Policies: Consequences for violating school rules refer to student handbook Consequences for violating class rules and expectations are as follows. 1. If possible, all first infractions will be addressed with a verbal warning or one on one conference. 2. Time-out from class activity, verbal warning, one on one conference and phone call home on second offense. 3. Third offense will be a written referral to office and phone call home to parents. 4. Fourth offense could result in failure and or removal from class Procedures for Non-Instructional Routines: All instructions for safety, locker room procedures, water breaks, roll call spots, and entering and exiting the gym, will be discussed in length at the beginning of the school year. These procedures are vital to making our area as safe and efficient as possible. We take this very serious and students that have a problem with simply entering and exiting properly could compromise the safety of the entire class. These procedures coincide with our evacuation procedures and could make a significant difference in how we get out of the building. Presentation of Rules and Procedures: Rules and procedures will be given to each student in writing and orally at the beginning of school and through out the entire week. Demonstrations and practice time will be allowed to insure complete understanding of most procedures. Teachers will continue to remind students of the rules and procedures through out the semester. Evacuation procedures for emergency drills and so forth will be practiced on a regular basis. Communication With Parents: Parent communication is a priority and necessity. Phone calls and parent grams will be our main focus of communication. All documentation of parent communication will be recorded in the front of the teachers grade book. It is the goal of the Physical Education Department to utilize this communication process to enhance student learning. We would like for parents to take an active role in our program by encouraging your teen to develop an active lifestyle during after school hours. We will be working diligently to make this course beneficial to your son/daughter not only for their present health, but for their future health as well. Students will participate in a wide variety of activities including team and individual sports. We also will be going on field trips to the skating rink and bowling alley. This course is geared for those students who enjoy staying fit and active. Physical Education III
PE III (Leisure Sports)-This elective is designed to teach skills necessary to enjoy a lfetime of activity in sports that will enhancethe student's health and personal fitness. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of leisure and lifetime sports/activities such as Badminton, Table Tennis, Bowling, Skating, Volleyball,Tennis, and others.
Physical Education IV Team Sports Level I- This elective course is designed to enhance the skills necessary to compete in a variety of athletic events on the high school level. Prerequisite is participation on any school-based Junior Varsity or Varsity level sports team along with Athletic Directors signature.
