Dear Parents,

We are thrilled to announce that Greenbrier will embark upon a new healthier menu and overall nutritional climate this upcoming school year. Greenbrier is one of ten schools to pilot this healthy menu.

Food choices will be prepared in a healthier fashion, and more fresh fruit and vegetables will be added to the menu. There will also be an emphasis on whole grain bread, pastas and more dried beans and peas.

A requirement for Greenbrier to participate in this new breakfast and lunch program included a 40-hour summer training for our cafeteria staff on healthy food preparation. Also, as a school we will focus on the CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) program. The CATCH program is a curriculum that promotes the benefits of healthy food choices and physical activity through instruction by the classroom teacher, physical education teacher, and food service program. It is a district wide health initiative that will hopefully reduce the obesity epidemic that is plaguing our nation's children. CATCH entails sending home healthy messages home so that parents can participate in the healthy changes as well.

We look forward to this wonderful opportunity and will have more information to share with you as we enter the new school year.

There is a major change in how we will celebrate birthdays for students this year. I am requesting that parents celebrate all birthdays in the same month on a specific day (the 3rd Tuesday of each month). This will be coordinated with your child’s Room Parent.

I also want to encourage parents to bring in HEALTHY snacks.
A list has been included to help you with these snacks. Join us in becoming healthier and making sure we are raising healthy children who are empowered to make healthy decisions in the future about their health.

We want to create more balance in the food choices we provide next year and in the future. Your support as well as your input is appreciated as we move forward. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
